ROGER BALLEN
Born in New York,
he has since 1982 lived and worked in South Africa. His images are really
something special: Roger Ballen’s photographs are like images from a waking
dream: compelling and thought-provoking, with layers of rich details, flashes
of dark humour, and an altered sense of place. Blurring the boundaries between
documentary photography and art, his work is both a powerful social statement
and a complex sociological study.
Roger has had several books published, the most recent
ones being Outland (2001), Shadow Chamber (2006) and Boarding
House (April 2009), all published at Phaidon. His work has been exhibited
in galleries and museums world-wide.

THE WORKSHOP
will be held on the island of Stord, which is situated
at the entrance of the Hardanger fjord, on the west coast of Norway. The island
has approximately 20.000 inhabitants, and is blessed with the magic light of
the North!
All lectures will be held at our studio, no less than
a former Kingdom Hall of Jehovas Witnesses… Participants will stay at a small
hotel 10 minutes’ walk from the studio. At the hotel there will be a darkroom
with facilities for black-and-white film processing, and print making (mainly
contact prints).
Should you wish to work digitally you will need to bring
all necessary equipment.
We will serve lunch in our garden every day, this is
included in the workshop-fee. Also included are a welcome dinner and a
farewell-dinner. Beverages (beer/wine/mineralwater) are included with all
lunches and the welcome-dinner.
During the workshop Roger will give participants daily
assignments so as to challenge them to use different parts of their minds, and
to extend their boundaries.
